Speech Therapy for a Brighter Tomorrow

Improving Language in the Home

on October 2, 2013

Q: My 2 and a half year old son was recently diagnosed with a language delay and receives speech therapy during the week. What are some ways I can help him at home?
A: There are many ways to help your child with his language development at home. 1. Talk. One of the most important things to do is always talk about what you are doing. Describing your actions, naming things around him, and asking him questions throughout the day are helping him learn. 2. Read. Reading is also an important way to improve language development. Start with simple board books and work up to longer picture stories. 3. Sing. Children love songs especially those with hand movements. They teach vocabulary, rhyming, help with memory, improve attention, and are a great social tool.
